Beginning on April 12, 1861, over the course of two days, more than 3,300 shells and cannon balls rained across Charleston Harbor towards Fort Sumter, the first shots fired in the Civil War. Correspondent Anthony Mason visits the fort with bestselling author Erik Larson, whose latest book, “The Demon of Unrest,” explores the events leading up to the bombardment and what Larson calls “the single most consequential day in American history.”

  1. Erik Larson is one of the best! I enjoyed “The Devil in the White City”, “Dead Wake” and “Isaac’s Storm”. Now I’m looking forward to “The Demon of Unrest”.

  2. A reminder to all the fools of this magnificent country that want to turn us into a fascist dictatorship ,they have forgotten how much blood has been shed so we can live free with all our hard earn rights intact and we have to keep the fight for our freedoms in the next election !

  3. Our political division today IS ALMOST ENTIRELY CREATED BY THE MEDIA. The talk of “racism” and “racist” has gone up 400-500% in the major media since 2010. Why? It’s only gone down in reality. Elon Musk showed us the graph. It’s an indictment of the media. The media is not reporting news; the media is MAKING news. They are fomenting discontent. Pure evil.

The only other major culprit of our divide: leftist professors (and administrators) in colleges and universities.

  4. 3:17 ~ We can agree to disagree… Not even close… Now, unless if you watch YT pundit channels like Tm-cast, etc… that push civil war memes – the rest of Americans, for the most part, get along. This idea of Civil War is virtual, and yes, there are incidents from time to time that reflect animosity on both sides. Let's also realize this virtual structure would in theory be highly promoted by Russia, China, and others who would love to see the United States break apart. It ain't happenning… peace out

  5. Funny how all these stories from the media in this election year are carefully crafted (without outright saying so) to draw parallels to modern today. Like Republicans are leading a charge to divide and take over America. Their propaganda is thinly veiled but dangerous. Typical Marxist tactics. Don’t fall for it my fellow Americans.

  6. The Secessionist state South Carolina bombarded the U.S. fort, Fort Sumter. Fort Sumpter had guarded their largest and most important city, and they bombarded it with thousands of shells made by, and paid for, the U.S. Government. Go figure.
