Baltimore Bridge Latest: Experts analyze bridge construction on role for collapse

36

A cargo ship lost power and rammed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, destroying the span in a matter of seconds and plunging it into the river in a terrifying collapse that could disrupt a vital shipping port for months. Six people were missing and presumed dead.

The ship’s crew issued a mayday call moments before the crash took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said. The ship struck one of the bridge’s supports, causing the structure to collapse like a toy. The vessel caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it.

  1. Maybe we should be upgrading bridges here in the country and not paying for ukraine's bridges. Not that an upgrade would have prevented this. Makes more sense not to build bridges near entrances to harbours or ports or build the shipping industry infrastructure somewhere else. But even that does not make sense. Ships have gotten bigger and bigger and more complex with electronics and the possibility of a component failure is always there. Especially since the ships are usually built by the lowest bidder.

  2. I Love how quickly the they came out to call it an "accident" and have the government"pay" for it all. Yet still one question still remains. Who stands to benefit the most from this tragedy? So many choices…oh yeah, btw THEY THINK YOU ARE BRAINWASHED as well and are banking on it to get away with the problem the SWAMP just caused. And like clockwork are swooping in to "save" us. For a price of course. There's ALWAYS a price.

  3. In many cases the reversing action will swing the ship's bow to starboard, but precisely how a ship will react when its engines go into reverse will vary. Therefore, stay well away. Remember, depending on draft and load it make take a ship a mile or more to stop, after its engines are reversed, therefore it like a few full trains in its weight on a cargo ship anyways.

  4. Ship registered n Singapore.
Lots of ships register in other countries
I wonder if that had anything to do with the lack of maintenance causing the power failure

  5. PLANNED!!!!! It’s all planned to slow the economy. Suez Canal ship disaster, chicken farms burning in flames, other farms burning up, I heard port in California not releasing goods so they can keep the inflation going, and now this container ship crashes to slow more the economy. It’s PLANNED!!!

  6. Our government has gone rougue, and we are under attack! This was no accident, this was deliberately done! Stay tuned for a narrative, like the Russian or Chinese boogie man hacked the boat or something. Ever since the Obama written movie "leave the world behind," black outs have been happening left and right. A major false flag cyber attack like the movie is coming yall. Prepare yourselves for a looooooong black out!

  7. Lost of the DALI's (or any other similar vessel) Electrical power is an apparent cause of this particular sad major accident.
The failure of Power management system and blackout on board any vessel and its consequences should be anticipated, Associated navigational risks assessed and mitigated in written form i.e. adequate and effective port's navigational procedures (i.e. escort tug aft for stopping and correcting ship movement until the bridge is cleared either in or outbound).
Therefore the underlying cause of this particualr major accidents is lack of adequate/effective risk assessment and navigational procedures of port in question but also and likely violation of ship manager's navigation manual procedures in some form.

  8. I hope they don't turn this into a George Floyd style investigation. The ship is from a foreign country & not from the United States. So I have to assume the people in charge of ramming into the bridge will walk off into the sunset free of all charges. It's only been hours since it happened and they are all starting to blame the bridge.

  9. Is the captain of the ship from India ? I am asking such question because Indian captain are not much efficient. Indian captain are cheaper with poor experienced and lack of knowledge.

  10. Why don’t you make a local call to the NC State engineering school, and get them to explain how a bridge will act when the main support between a 720’ and 1,200’ span gets knocked the hell out. 100,000 tons against a 100’ tall concrete structure is not a fair fight. Why don’t you reporters actually do some critical thinking or research, instead of just reading some bullshit on the teleprompter. You might sound smarter than this report did.

  11. Yeah blame its construction after it stood for decades but sadly it wasn't built to withstand a huge ship slamming into it. I have a feeling it would have been there for many more decades had it not been hit
