Campus unrest: Will protests make a difference?

50

It’s been an upsetting time on American college campuses, where protests over the war in Gaza, fueled by social media, have divided students, faculty and administrators. Why are protests erupting now? And are they effective? Correspondent David Pogue talks with Michael Kazin, a veteran of 1960s anti-war protests; Dan Mogulof, public affairs officer at UC Berkeley; and Georgetown University protest organizer Selina al-Shihabi, about the tensions between free speech and public safety.

  1. Nope, not one bit of difference because the rest of America sees the protesters for what they are, paid agitators doing the bidding of China and Iran whose goal is to destabilize the US and the West.

  2. BIG DIFFERENCE between protests in 60s and now. Back then there was an active draft to students of college age so the anti-war was an organic rise in protest to seeing brothers and friends come back in a terrible shape and also a fear that they were going next. This is an orchestrated protest from what they are seeing online and is not clear who/what is behind it.

  3. They will make zero difference. Joe Biden was not elected president over Israel. The people of Israel elected Netanyahu as their Prime Minister and not Bribing Biden.

  4. Protests are not going to make any difference. These students are getting their blood pressure up. Remove these students from the roll. the people who are protesting for gaza are a Very bad influence to all students all over the world.

Is there anything special about life? Let's hold a festival for the freedom of Palestine against Biden and Netinyahu, the mass murderers of civilians in the Gaza Strip. Let's take this opportunity to live a wonderful life. We have a golden opportunity. Like Biden and Netinyahu, the Gaza Strip group I was given a golden opportunity to live a more fulfilling life than the massacre criminals

  6. Free Palestine= Go to Palestine and help them free.

    or

Protest against all other Genocides like The Uyghurs Muslims in China, etc

    Why just Palestine??

  7. the Vietnam protesters were not advocating for the death and erasure of south Vietnamese, they also did not condone anything like intif#da, blowing up school busses, cafes, , etc. also big difference the Vietnam 68 protesters were anti war – while these anti Israel protestors want the destruction of Israel ( half the world's jew's) "by any means necessary"

  8. I have been watching the show for about a month and I realized all they do is try to stir the s*** pot their reporters and their staff in my opinion are nothing but a bunch of liberals trying to stir the pot and cause trouble across US and the world that's something the president we have now does not need He's weak as hell anyhow.

  9. Why don't these uneducated, hypocrite students protest for the universities to divest in businesses that do business with The United States? That would make as little sense as what they are doing.

  10. Taking a public stand against a genocide shouldn't be confused with antisemitism. The two things are not related and to suggest or claim otherwise demonstrates a lack of intelligence or any understanding of the value of humanity and appears merely to be a petty effort to incite issues. History does indeed appear to be repeating itself. We had a Holocaust and we now have a Genocide. The two are horribly similar and as there are "Holocaust deniers", there are (sadly) some "Genocide deniers" now openly appearing on mainstream media…

  11. They don't arrest thieves stealing less than $950 of merchandises. Yet they are arresting students in peace protests on campuses. That's quite a beautiful sight to behold.

  12. If it weren't for protests we'd still be subjects of the King of England, women still wouldn't have the right to vote, and black people would still be sitting at the back of the bus.

  13. These young adults get it, we are sick of seeing out tax money spent on wars instead of investing in the basics that America desperately needs such as housing, healthcare, and infrastructure.

  14. The students aren’t influencing anything in regard to the wars in the Middle East. Period. What they are influencing is the perception that incoming freshmen have of schools. Perhaps student may not chose to go to Columbia or USC after seeing how these universities treat protesting students

  15. As we can see, the protests do not work, and Palestinians are dying every second as the protesters protest. The US government allows genocide in Palestine while letting protests go on.

  16. Time and place rules for a protest! 😂
Dr. Martin Luther King sent kids out to get beat up by cops. If the students manage to keep it in the news every night until elections, they may get not all, but may get some of what they want.

  17. Clearly these students are being funded…..tents, signage, etc aren't free. These are the same students who say they can't pay their student loan debt. The big question is who REALLY is behind these protests?

  18. American planes are bombing gaza and dual citizenship holder American Zionist soldiers are in thousands in idf and America is supporting Israel on all fronts even the propoganda

  19. The death of American democracy began when their government tried to silence criticism and student voices with violence. They are students who only speak out and don't point weapons, why are the police acting arrogant?

  20. ISRAELI SETTLERS AGAINST THE CHRISTIAN ARMENIAN PATRIARCHATE IN JERUSALEM

ARMENIAN QUARTER, OLD CITY, JERUSALEM – We are representatives of the Jerusalemite Armenian community, which includes social, charitable, youth and political clubs and associations and, of course, the SavetheArQ movement. We urgently appeal to the international community for support in safeguarding the historical Armenian Quarter at a terribly crucial moment for our community.

Recent actions by the Israeli police have added a dangerous layer to the already existential threats we are facing. Despite ongoing legal proceedings initiated by the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Jerusalem Armenian community seeking to nullify the illegal transaction involving the Cows’ Garden property, the Israeli police have now joined Israeli settlers to actively escalate tensions, forcefully change the facts on the ground and critically endanger our 1600-year-old presence in Jerusalem. To be clear, we declare in one united voice that any transaction regarding the Cows’ Garden is void, threatens our existence as a community and violates our property rights. The very existence of the Armenian Patriarchate and the Armenian community of Jerusalem is now under historic threat.

We implore the international community to recognize the significance of our cultural and historical heritage in Jerusalem and to stand with us in defense of our rights to exist as Armenians in Jerusalem. The Armenian Quarter is not merely a geographical location; it is a symbol of our enduring presence and identity. Any encroachment upon it not only undermines our community and Patriarchate, but it also threatens to destroy the very tapestry of the Old City.

We call upon all concerned parties—including heads of state, diplomatic missions, international organizations and advocates for human rights—to raise the public profile of this existential crisis, unite in solidarity with us and exert maximum efforts to halt further encroachments into Armenian properties and preserve the status quo in the Armenian Quarter.

We also call upon all those who care about the integrity of Jerusalem, its history and the viability of all of its communities to demand that the government of Israel order the Israeli police to cease aiding, abetting and even spearheading the company’s assault on the Armenian community, the Armenian Quarter and the seizure of the community’s precious properties.

They are armed. We are not. The rule of law—not illegal and forceful encroachment of Israeli settlers aided by the Israeli state police—must prevail. Our physical security, the pending legal processes and the status quo must be protected. Right now, all are in jeopardy because of the actions taken by the Israeli police and settlers.

The protection and preservation of our heritage are not only a duty but also a testament to the shared values of respect, tolerance and cultural diversity that must be upheld in Jerusalem.
