Canada vs. U.S. pricing: Why we often pay more (CBC Marketplace)

Originally broadcast November 22, 2013

“I’m afraid we’re being gouged.” Marketplace hits the road putting prices to the test in Canada and the U.S. checking in on products at some of the largest retailers. It’s no surprise that Canadians pay more than our friends south of the border for some items, including how we’re being shut out of cheaper US car prices. You’ll never believe what we find on our cross border shop-a-thon.

  1. I literally do not understand why they were comparing direct nominal differences in prices. The U.S. and Canada have different currencies. Literally every Canadian price they stated was cheaper in US dollars when converted to US dollars.. it literally makes no sense to say “this product is 15$ CAD while the same exact product is only 10$ in the US” if the 2 countries have 2 different currencies that have different exchange rates.

  2. Price Of Healthcare By Country Per Person

    United States 🇺🇸 $14,500+
    Canada 🇨🇦 $7,000+
    Australia 🇦🇺 $2,000+

Note Canada 🇨🇦 And Australia 🇦🇺 Has Government Control In Costs 😮

  3. The Ford Explorer Is More Expensive In Europe 🇪🇺 About $82,000 – $100,000 And The United States 🇺🇸 $36,000 – $60,000 The Ford F150 United States 🇺🇸 $67,000 Canada 🇨🇦 $90,000 Australia 🇦🇺 $100,000

  4. Canada 🇨🇦 Is Expensive Than The United States 🇺🇸 But Australia 🇦🇺 Is More Expensive Than In Canada Or The United States 🇺🇸 Australia 🇦🇺 Might Be The Winner Of Being Expensive But When When It Comes To Healthcare The United States 🇺🇸 Has The Highest Healthcare Costs Than In Canada 🇨🇦 And Australia 🇦🇺

  5. I enjoy this programme a lot, but i think this episode is by far the worst in the series. It makes it sound as if these companies are ripping off Canadians, but theres more to the story – tax, transportation, economies of scale, etc.
Wish you had an expert in this field to discuss this, or would it ruin the story telling you wanted which you've decided prior to the investigation.

  6. This is on a slightly different topic but I've been buying art and other items internationally during covid, on e-bay, and most ads say "does not ship to Canada", sellers will sometimes ship here if I ask them. Americans have become protectionist, and even though we are their close neighbors, they don't seem to care about our wellbeing. I can buy items from anywhere else around the world and get what I want with no issues.
