Cuba’s crumbling economy: Island plunges further into crisis • FRANCE 24 English

37

Cubans are taking to the streets as their country spirals further into economic crisis. Suffering from food shortages and power outages, residents are demanding action from the regime. The country has never recovered from the Covid pandemic crippling its tourism sector. The additional burden of US sanctions and the long-running US embargo has not helped. Cubans lack essential items like food and medicine, while fuel prices rose 500 percent at the beginning of March. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24’s Lauren Bain.

  1. Blaming the US is as stupid as blaming Venezuela and Russia for not sending enough Oil. The real trigger for this crises is the Venezuelan economic trouble. BTW: Cuba imports wheat and grain for ab. 400m$ from the US. For 4m people. This island can't even feed itself today.

  2. Cuba before 1959 had a GDP greater than that of Spain and Italy, which is why it was compared with developed countries, never with the countries of the geographical region where it is located. Today, as an attempt at consolation, even the Castro henchmen themselves compare it with Haiti, with the Brazilian favelas and in more desperate cases, with African countries. Cuba under Castro regressed to the economic levels of the early 20th century, when it had just liberated itself from Spain.

  3. I was there in October, and it was absolutely heartbreaking with them out of food everywhere . People had no bread butter for the week 4 eggs per family per month, are you kidding me… they are relying on people coming and bringing them items such as aspirins and Tylenol but they need it desperately 🇨🇦 we tried to help … gave feminine hygiene items and every dollar we had to them including our extra sandles and batteries

  4. All these whiny documentaries claim Cuba's woes are from external forces; but simply put it's the COMMUNISM. Nobody produces anything because all incentive (and human DIGNITY) has been stripped and outlawed. "IT'S THE COMMUNISM STUPID"

  5. Cuba's economy is being eroded because they keep giving 100s of $billions to foreign countries, but when it comes to giving aid to people in their own country, they say that would be immoral because it's Socialism.

  6. The world capitalist boycott of Cuba, brokered by the U.S., has crippled Cuba for decades, especially since the fall of the Soviet Union. The Cuban are to be saluted for their devotion to and protection of socialism. The scum of U.S. imperialism, lead by $billionaires, bankers and hedge fund managers, is anti-working class and anti-socialist. Restrictions placed against Cuba, which the French Government supports 100%, is the reason for this situation. Cuba is not run by the working class but neither is any other country. However, they struggle against capitalism for decades and won their freedom via revolution. Because the revolution has not spread they are isolated. Anyone who cheers this tragedy is no more than a stooge for imperialism and against the advance of the workers and oppressed.

  7. Cuba has always blamed the US boycott for their failed economic policies. Yet they trade with every other country in the world. It’s not the US at fault it’s the Cuban government that failed.

  8. 2:25 Cuba doesn't normally stamp your passport unless you insist on it (they stamp a removable card they give you that you can throw away/keep in a drawer at home after you leave) to allow you to conceal the fact you visited Cuba. Sometimes you don't want to "collect them all" on your passport. You can always keep the removable card as a keepsake at home.

  9. The guy at the begining of the video is a fool!! La Libreta (the ration/ "subsidize" booklet) never worked!! Even before covid the amount of food allowed by the libreta was only enough for about three out of the four weeks of the month. I know because I grew up there in La Habana in the 1960's and 1970's. My grandmother Hortensia who used to be the cook of the family had to do "miracles" in the kitchen to enable her to feed the whole family. And most of the times we had to go to the black market to make up for the food the government ration card (because that is what la libreta was!!!!) would fail to deliver in food. We escaped in the Mariel Boatlift of 1980, and came to the US to the land of Freedom and Opportunity.

  10. I’ve been thinking of Cuba 3 times this month. I usually bring Lays Potato Chips or Hershey Chocolate Bars. I can eat for free for the price of one bar or bag of chips. It’s a very sad situation.

  11. Ya was there in January.worst trip I've ever taken.so much worse than last time I was there 10 years ago. Those poor people. I'll tell you they won't beable to keep tourism going either with the lack of food alcohol price of trips etc

  12. They are laughable… are they saying they are proud of that healthcare system? Just shut up… your government is killing you slowly and you are trying to justify it? Obviously the video is completely bian.. blaming the USA? come on…
