23. The election in Alabama this week is not an outlier. Democrats have been doing consistently better in real elections than in polls since November 2020. And this has become an even stronger trend since the Supreme Court overturn Roe vs. Wade.

    Once again, the polls indicated that this special election this week was not going to be a problem for the Republicans. This is traditionally a strong Republican district. And recent polls showed the Republican candidate was going to win by 10 %. Instead, he lost be a whopping 25 %.

    Once again, the polls have been proven wrong. But what do you guess that next week the big headline will be something like "Polls indicate that Trump is up by 3 % in Pennsylvania. When are people going to wake up and realize that something is wrong with our polls?

    Why should the polls be consistently off? It could be that the poll who answer polling calls tend to own Land-Line-Phones, without caller ID, who can't easily screen out calls from unknown numbers. Many polling firms are run by conservatives who may prefer polls results in favor in Republicans/Trump. In any case, something is wrong.

    Why is this a problem? The Republicans are doing one thing right which many Democrats are not. They are relentlessly optimistic. Why is this important? Because in a close election, being perceived as the likely winner is important. Some voters will not be knowledgable and make up their minds at the last minute. For these voters, many will want to go with a winner. Because if they vote for the winner, they will think of themselves as winners.

    So us who support Democracy, we need to stop expressing our worries. Biden and Trump are going to be the candidates. We are going to have a 81 year old going against a 78 year old who is clearly in worst health and just as clearly in serious mental decline. So don't worry about this. Be confident and express confidence from here on out.
