Experimenting on Animals: Inside The Monkey Lab

36

VICE News gets rare access to Europe’s largest primate testing facility, the Biomedical Primate Research Center (BPRC) in the Netherlands, where scientists try to find cures for the worst human diseases, while claiming to provide unparalleled care for the monkeys in the hope they live the most animal friendly life before and during testing.

Once selected, inside the laboratories, monkeys are shaved, anesthetized, and experimented on for research purposes.

Yet the center remains controversial. Protestors gather regularly in front of its gates and there are calls in the Dutch parliament to close the site and switch to alternatives for testing on primates.

But as the BPRC explains to VICE News, modern science isn’t there yet. In the meantime, it still uses about 200 monkeys a year for a slew of experiments to find cures, and even replacements for primate testing in the future.

  1. If you're sitting safe and watching this video right now, it's because of our last generation of experiments on mice and monkeys. For example, the production of antibiotics or the Covid-19 vaccine was not possible without clinical trials on monkeys. I say this as a person whose field of study was pharmacy. So without getting emotional, consider all the facts.

  2. On one hand, this is horrifying and sad but on the other, this was necessary at least in the past to study disease and other issues to learn and come up with treatments. However, now with powerful computers and a greater understanding of our own physiology, we could probably come up with specialist computer models for research that would render animal trials mostly unnecessary.

  6. The problem is there are to many monkeys in certain parts of the world, they multiply like rats or mice If you had to live around them it might be a different way you think about them.

  7. Sup Vice hope you see this there is a small rural town in America named
Bainbridge GA. And they getting ready to build a monkey Facility that will hold up to 30,000 monkey's that they are going be running test on. They are trying to stop it but it seems like its not going to happen.

  8. Sooo, We should experiment on humans, baby, humans? I've been watching this for years now. And if I had to choose which one, it would ALWAYS be monkeys. If you are a religious person, you already know. God created man and women humans to have dominion over all the beasts. If we ever have a better test to test drugs and any chemical on, if it's better all across the board, do you honestly believe that it would not be used? We would have been using it already. I Dont think animal cruelty is cruel unless we are beating animals, starving animals and doing nothing about it. We are human, we make mistakes which is why testing is necessary in the first place. PETA, God love you, but something's are here for reasons you Dont understand, apparently.
