India’s general election will take place in seven phases over April and May, the country’s Election Commission has said.

With some 968 million eligible voters, India’s election will be the largest the world has seen.

Opinion polls predict a win for Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, which is eyeing a record third term in power, while a coalition block of more than two dozen opposition parties has been formed.

Voting will be staggered, beginning on 19 April and ending on 1 June, and the results will be announced on 4 June, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar told a news conference.

  1. @ BBC always being the BBC…they need stuck to on to their narratives in future as well…else the real face would be exposed in near future!!!

  2. What nonsense! 198 million voters! Small time, irrelevant, provincial country increasingly of no consequence. In fact, there are approximately 980 million, not 198 million, eligible voters in India in 2024.

  3. What’s the point of voting when we as citizens can’t get water, can’t get access to healthcare from government, ridden with unemployment, woh and the list goes on .

  4. The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it"..Modis policy is distract people from issues of prime focus like employment rate,Happiness index,GDP growth etc..by spreading religious hatred.People should vote based on development!!!!

    Manipur violence,Farmers protest,wrestlers protest,Ladakh crisis…

  5. BBC should stop broadcasting wrong news… now people can fact check in a second on social media. And why you guys always have a negative opinion?? This propaganda will not work in this world anymore

  6. These british turds – such liars and racists. They use coolies to report and propogate their views on india. no one watches them and everyone hates them.

  7. Only who has observed India from the very root level can estimate the result of these elections you can't count on some people of big cities for such huge elections.
