  1. Yes, this is something I've noticed since coming back to live in New Orleans last November after 10 years in Thailand. The Latinos, from various areas (Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Cuba, etc.) operate more than half of the businesses in my neighborhood, and many of the businesses are extremely well managed and operated. For example, the Ideal Market – which has far lower prices than Rouse's and fresher, better quality products than Winn Dixie or most local grocery stores. Also, many restaurants, beauty stores, nightclubs, and construction businesses, as well as money transfer and cashier services. They have friendly and quick customer service. The Latinos have a drive and energy lacking among many other Americans now, and they also have a good social ability with people.

In many cases, these Latino and other immigrant businesses step in where existing services by large, established mainstream corporations are deficient. For example, the local McDonalds has very slow service, due to the fact that it does not have sufficient employees to keep the shop clean and serve its customers, and it has turned off local people by trying to get people to use machines to order and pay by bank account, whereas New Orleanians prefer personal service and many people find the machines complicated; also, many immigrants find it easier to pay cash. So the local businesses, such as the Ideal Market, the Palestinian Banks PoBoy shop, and the Vietnamese restaurant, have rushed in to provide fresh, quality food, coffee, etc., with quick service in a clean area.
