Deadly earthquake rocks Taiwan | The number of fatalities continues to climb
Breaking news from Taiwan: a powerful earthquake has rocked the region, toppling buildings and triggering a tsunami in southern Japan. Video footage from Taipei shows the intense shaking caused by the magnitude 7.5 quake, a significant event for this earthquake-prone area. Reports suggest people may be trapped in collapsed buildings, and landslides have been observed. Thankfully, some footage from within buildings shows that although belongings were shaken loose, the individuals are safe.
This disaster unfolded just within the last hour, with fears of a tsunami wave reaching up to 10 feet in height in southern Japan. While there’s no threat to California, our thoughts are with those affected in the impacted areas.
The potential devastation is clear from reports of collapsed buildings and mudslides. The quake struck at 7:58 a.m., a time when many were likely still at home or beginning their workday. The combination of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami poses a significant threat to the safety and infrastructure of the region.
