UK economy: what does technical recession mean for Sunak?

Rishi Sunak pledged to kickstart growth. Instead, the UK fell into recession late last year.

Output shrank for two consecutive quarters at the end of 2023 – with people spending less and doctor’s strikes contributing to the contraction.

But economists expect the recession to be brief, and the Chancellor is downplaying the data, telling this programme the economy is turning a corner.

    All these idiots who were 'laughing' at Germany for being in one, and who were adamant the UK wouldn't go into recession. Well you lot are looking pretty silly now, aren't you?

    The writing was always on the wall – a disastrous Brexit that's laid waste to our economy; our politicians failing to factor in a possible recession (through a mixture of hubris, arrogance, and incompetence); and our continued heavy reliance on imports from the EU.

    Well who knew we were so reliant on imports eh (sarcasm) ….. being an island nation (double sarcasm).

    So many who cheered Brexit, and cheered the demise of the EU. You are the ones with egg on your faces….not I.

    If only we had capable and skilled politicians who could guide us safely out of a recession. What a shame we don't. And such a pity that we've destroyed our relationship with the rest of Europe – because they're not going to help us. Why should they?

    This our problem, our mess, and our responsibility to sort out. No one else's. But I wouldn't expect the UK to learn any lessons from any of this, because that would be admitting that we were wrong; and showing humbleness and remorse just isn't in the British makeup.

    If it were, then other countries would be more inclined to help us. But too many here are so ungrateful for any help from the rest of Europe, that it's probably best they don't bother. Maybe we need to suffer more as a country. The message might then get through.

  26. Investments are going to "entertainment" and not actual production of raw materials.
    Thus, the supply kept going down while it's price, soaring.
    Replacing humans in the process will only worsen the situation too.

They still managed to remove the cap on bankers bonuses, though, after reversing all of Liz, trusses and kwazes potential changes…… should’ve kept Liz truss and her sidekick… Jeremy hunt blaming Ukraine and high interest rates … how absurd……… hunt should be honest. The inflation is a result of government policy ……… creating money. If we are that short of ‘dough ‘ why is he sending so much to the weapons industry to blow people up and murder people?

  47. What the politicians are missing is that most people have lost faith in the future.

    They’ll be another Prime Minister,another cabinet. More U turns, more cancelled plans. Another direction, another idea. Another let down, another broken promise. More empty words.

    Pensions, houses, careers, children, communities. All long projects that people are less and less willing or able to commit to.

    Until we can make the future feel a little more stable, a little more worthwhile, then we will continue in this societal nosedive.
