US health worker shortage: Filipino nurses say they are being exploited

32

The US has been battling a shortage of healthcare worker for years.
To fill the void, it’s recruited a record number of nurses from the Philippines.
But labour and migrant rights activists say many are being exploited.

Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo reports from Manila, the Philippines.

Eleanor Nolasco is the president of Filipino Nurses United – an advocacy group supporting the rights and welfare of nurses.
She explains what the government needs to do to keep nurses from seeking jobs abroad and that poor working conditions and low wages in the Philippines are pushing nurses to move abroad.

  1. There’s no other easy way to get in the United States unless you will use an Agency.

Lucky for nursing profession, there’s a chance for them to work and be a citizen in the US.

Ask for a copy of contract first and if you think that it would not be fair, then don’t sign it. Find another way to get in the United States.

  2. They’re all exploited
all over the world but they still make pretty good money
in the US.The only profession that you’ll never be unemployed and you have to be a very patient person

  3. This is what the Philippine government says are the heroes but in reality, Filipino workers abroad are modern day slaves. And the Marcos government does not care, as long as they remit billions of pesos to the Philippines.

  4. I dont agree. Nurses are not exploited in the US. Know your facts. How much is the salary of nurses in the philippines, middle east then combine them and compare to the salary in america. Do the math dude.

  5. the real thing is they leave the philippines because of salary is not suitable for their profession and not enough to sustain for supporting a family and also lack of benefits.. filipino always care about their family.. that's what we are.. we're family oriented people..

  6. Yeah it’s not fair but isn’t that life?? Filipinos are hard working and are keen to work in the USA. Is Saudi Arabia a better option for them? 👩‍⚕️

  7. I’ve worked in the US for 30 some years and have not experienced this said discrimination or exploitation American nurses and other nurses from other countries are paid the same relative to your work and years of experience. FilAm nurses here in the US have a much better and successful life. If you are talking about exploitation of nurses you better look at the Philippine record. Philippines exploits their nurses which is far worse than other countries. Look at the Philippine nurses salary. You could hardly support yourself let alone having a family.

  8. These nurses on this news/documentary if they are complaining about being exploited once they are done with their said contract they can go back to the Philippines. They can contact or report to the Philippine embassy about their grievances.

  9. My relatives and friends are nursed Philippine. I can tell you: this video is NOT true! My relatives and friends are thriving and highly respected and valued by the hospitals they work at.

  10. I used to be an OFW but now an NZ resident. I worked in Thailand as a teacher, I was underpaid and overworked. Meanwhile, my western colleagues earn 5 times more than me and they get special treatment. I left and moved in NZ. I worked at a company and I earn the same as my white colleagues. My boss would give me a raise with in 3 mos and I didn’t have to worry about going for holidays or taking a sick leave because I get paid and no one cares if I go on a month long holiday. After getting my residency, my partner and I decided to have our own business. I’m one of the lucky ones to have left that OFW cycle. I thought about my fellow Filipinos abroad who can do better but instead they try to be a hero for companies that only see them as a number. We get exploited because we are okay with it. JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN ENDURE THINGS, DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD ENDURE THINGS.

  11. why did they use Ray Raval as a sample of an agency/recruiter that exploits nurses!? Me and my friends were recruited by him. I dont think we’re being exploited nor overworked in our hospital right now.

  12. Exploited because they allowed it. They went on to illegal and abusive recruiters. Hey knew there were red flags but still proceeded with their application. Responsible recruiters would not ask you to pay for your immig fees or plane tickets. That’s partly applicants’ fault for not being cautious and for allowing these abuses to happen to them.

  13. What a disappointing response from a leader. Not to be rude but so basically sinasabi mo na these nurses are left to fend for themselves? "It's the applicants responsibility? So kanya kanya nalang tayo? Nagleader ka pa. ang tanong is anong ginagawa ng pilipinas, ninyo para solusyonan yung problema? Tapos leave it dun sa may problema to figure it out on his/her own? Bravo. Talagang uunlad tayo niyan.
