One kilogram of cashews can cost $10 wholesale — over seven times as much as peanuts. And in the US, retail prices for raw whole cashews can reach $15 per pound. But cashews are more complex than most other nuts. Each cashew kernel grows inside a toxic shell. It must be carefully extracted from this shell and rigorously processed to ensure that the caustic liquid inside the shell is completely destroyed. So, how are cashews processed? And is this what makes them so expensive?
The processing of cashews is becoming widely automated, though it is still done by hand in many factories in Sri Lanka.

so what he is saying there is a old lady that haven wash her hands for years tuching your nuts holy molly
I wonder what the fruit is like. It looks appealing.
Well I guess cashews are off the menu now 🤢
Damn I will never take cashews for granted again. And that lady that was shelling the nuts with bags on her hand? Get her some decent protective gloves!!
did you know that cashews come from a fruit?
Omg!!!! Why do we eat them!?!?!
Nota for us here.
this industry is nuts
I feed the local crows cashews, they are easy to throw. Sometimes the crow will catch a cashew on a bounce.
It's unfortunate they throw the fruit away; the fruit is very tasty.
Its a fruit not a nut
Who cares they are mostly poisonous one of the most prolific causes of food borne poisoning DON’T eat them
They say the liquor made from the fruit is good would like to try it
I've seen cashew processing plants that do this on a large professional scale. I don't know why they chose this small operation where they don't even have actual gloves.
"These nuts are considered dangerous to touch and can cause burns. Anyway here's a bunch of people who don't get paid enough touching them with bare hands"
What's the bet those workers burning themselves are getting about one cent for every ten dollars of nuts they collect. Wealth disparity is insane…
Yea yea yea give me my cashews
Gross I’m not eating these anymore…
I'm pleased you pointed out how much damage picking and processing by hand causes to their hands.
In India we have kaju or cashews everyday like literally as a snack, serving it to guests and we use it to cook food in sabji also…bc it is so easily available I did not know the hard work behind it….its incredible yet disheartening to see the people who work so hard for us to not be able to afford basic gloves😔
Iam Salvadorian living in California. When I was a kid living
In El salvador I just to love climbing the trees and and get the Cashews.
"Did you know that cashews come from a fruit" -a man who liked to dip chicken biscuits in mashed potatoes
God bless these poor people … I don’t eat a lot of cashews but I respect the work done now in a way I never thought of before.
I have a friend from El Salvador and he told me that the cashew fruit are delicious and no one even sells them; they just go to rot. Why can't they become another source of income?

Icoone OF DUFAN.

In Thailand they make cashew apple soda which is the fruit above the cashew it is really tasty.
Sooo.. What do they do with the fruit that it's attached to?.. Just toss them? 🤨
I saw the trees and tried fresh ones in Costa Rica. So delicious
The fruit itself is super delicious
SelectED tropical climates around the world, not "select".
I noticed one thing in this video. They didn't mention the fruit, the Cashew Apple. It is an edible and tasty fruit.
I still think it's the best nut.
They look like grubs coming out of the fruit🤢 I don’t think I’ll look at the the same, delicious as they are
Are they expensive? I've never noticed.
No, sorry. You lost me at "and the worlds climate crisis could make it even harder."
Marañon back home in Guatemala 🇬🇹. We made some juice from the fruit and it is delicious
In Cambodia 1kg=1$
Poison ivy family?
No wonder if I eat cashews I get a trip to the ER with diverticulitis.
I feel so bad now. I sometimes buy a pack of cashews and devour them in 5 to 10 minutes… That one pack probably took a combined man power of 2-3 hours and I just paid a few bucks for it… lol 🙁
Well, i now have more respect for the workers and the humble cashew. You learn every day.
Oh, the humanity!
Now I know why they're $7 for a can.
