Why Cashew Nuts Are So Expensive | So Expensive

43

One kilogram of cashews can cost $10 wholesale — over seven times as much as peanuts. And in the US, retail prices for raw whole cashews can reach $15 per pound. But cashews are more complex than most other nuts. Each cashew kernel grows inside a toxic shell. It must be carefully extracted from this shell and rigorously processed to ensure that the caustic liquid inside the shell is completely destroyed. So, how are cashews processed? And is this what makes them so expensive?

The processing of cashews is becoming widely automated, though it is still done by hand in many factories in Sri Lanka.

  1. I've seen cashew processing plants that do this on a large professional scale. I don't know why they chose this small operation where they don't even have actual gloves.

  2. "These nuts are considered dangerous to touch and can cause burns. Anyway here's a bunch of people who don't get paid enough touching them with bare hands"

What's the bet those workers burning themselves are getting about one cent for every ten dollars of nuts they collect. Wealth disparity is insane…

  3. In India we have kaju or cashews everyday like literally as a snack, serving it to guests and we use it to cook food in sabji also…bc it is so easily available I did not know the hard work behind it….its incredible yet disheartening to see the people who work so hard for us to not be able to afford basic gloves😔

  4. I have a friend from El Salvador and he told me that the cashew fruit are delicious and no one even sells them; they just go to rot. Why can't they become another source of income?

  5. I feel so bad now. I sometimes buy a pack of cashews and devour them in 5 to 10 minutes… That one pack probably took a combined man power of 2-3 hours and I just paid a few bucks for it… lol 🙁
