Why Drugs Are So Expensive

41

Americans today spend more on pharmaceuticals per capita than anyone else in the world, and more than one in five say they have trouble affording their prescription drugs. But they might not know about the alternative pathways to medicine. VICE’s Hamilton Morris explores the world of clandestine chemists, DIY bio hackers, and grey markets to see if a more democratized medicinal future is indeed possible.

  1. Here is the real problem that this didn't address. Other countries have lower drug prices because their governments haggle with the drug companies over what they can and can't charge for the medication. So people in the US can go to Mexico and get a drug that costs over $2000 here for $300 there, just an example and it's a specific drug I'm thinking about.
Thanks to the way the system works, if you have health insurance your entire life and get something like cancer they raise the premiums until you can't afford to pay it anymore. Insurance is our enemy. It is literally a business that drives health care costs out of site. Hospitals, etc charge exorbitant amounts because they know insurance companies demand deep discounts. so when you get that $40,000 bill for surgery, your share is probably equal to or greater than what the insurance company actually pays. It's all a scam.

  2. The medication that best treated my migraines, DHE, has been around since 1946. It has a retail price of over $1,000. Something since pharmacies charge different prices it can be much more. Needless to say I don't use it and just grin and bear it. For the sick and terminal this should be criminal.

  3. The executive guy was just spewing BS. I think he needs a deeper confrontation about how it is not feasible to pay for the drugs. "Dude, your patients cannot afford these drugs. Nobody has that kind of money except for you and you are showing us all that you want to keep it that way. You're literally saying that if you can't afford it, you can just die." That's what they need to hear every day

  4. As someone who is writing a script for a drug crime story this is very informative. From my research, its how muvh like in the illicit world of drug selling, its not that much different from the pharmaceutical companies

  5. How much would things cost if it was all brocken down? Cost of raw material, a fair wage for the people involved in manufacture and distribution? Where does the profit go in mass manufacture? I feel so sorry for Americans and how their health is provided for! Insurance may cover you when you become ill, but I guess the people that don't get ill begrudge people that do? The NHS here in the UK was probably the fairest system in the World, it should not matter if you are rich or poor, we should all be treated equally? Class and wealth should not dictate who lives or dies…

  6. Maybe there should be classes on making your own legal pharmaceuticals, with proper safety training. Its way cheaper and can be safe. If they're making medication, they probably don't want to die so they'll be careful. The prices companies charge for medication is tyrannical.

  7. …..the answer is because y'all love to put a price tag on everything and MEDICINE is on that list. Crazy because everyone on this planet needs a type of medicine at one point (several times) in their life.

  8. In Bangladesh, we have multiple companies making lenalidomide. All of them are roughly equal in terms of price.A single tablet from all of these brands cost around 200 BDT or 1.83 USD only.

    This is insane….!

  9. The sad thing is Dr. Banting didn't patent insulin because he wanted it to be easily available to anyone who needed it. Little did he know that 100 years later it would still be too expensive for so many….

  10. The healthcare industry is such a fucking unnecessarily scammified shitshow in America. And we won't get to do a damn thing about it until the south secedes. That option sounds better all the time. Freeloaders.
