Why Ford And Other American Cars Don’t Sell In Japan

Some of the top-selling car brands in the United States are Japanese — Toyota, Honda, and Nissan especially. But the reverse isn’t true – General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler combined make up only .3% of the Japanese auto market. With strict regulations, strong local manufacturing, and a particularly Japanese way of retailing cars, the country will likely continue to be a difficult place for American automakers.

  1. Why do you think American cars don't sell in Japan? Protectionism? Reliability? Vehicle size? Lack of dealer support?

Is it worthwhile for U.S. companies to invest in the Japanese market?

  2. The Japanese are loyal to their customers unlike American car company owners and investors they have lied and cheated and screwed the American people over so many times in history they do not deserve the American people's business anymore.

  3. Not only narrow space is the reason why Japanese prefer small cars, but also, for economical reason. 4 kind of annual taxes avg.300-400USD in total will be charged to every owner, car insurance is forced which causes additonal cost of avg.100-120 per year, parking fee 50-100USD per month, and finally, heavily taxed fuel which is 4.15USD per galon. Oh and one more, every highway in Japan will also be charged. It might not be too expensive for you guys, but remember, Japanese avg. income is not so much high any more and thus is huge cost for us.

  4. The median annual wage of Japanese is around $27,000. Many new grads straight out of 4-year-university earn $13,000.00 annually. So, they turn to ultra-light models that are built to Japanese Industrial standards for tax, insurance, and highway usage fees (they are not "freeways" like the Americans enjoy). Many of those generations who were born in the 1970s~80s, who are my peers, do not have permanent positions due to people missing out on employment, and many of them are struggling to make ends meet. There is no way of buying SUVs or pickup trucks, that have more than 660CC (0.7 Liters) in engine displacements, and even Japanese car brands are struggling to get into those markets. I think the Japanese would love to buy American cars if they had the wage, but in reality, there is very little discretionary income spending on automobiles.

  5. Comedy is the Reliability Gap Closed between Japanese and American Vehicles….based on what metric ??…. look at any of the Best selling Japanese Vehicles that are 5yrs, 10yrs and 15yrs Old next to best selling American vehicles the same age…..Trust Me It's Like Nite & Day Different in Quality

  6. In Thailand the car buying experience is very much the same with the Japanese one. It was hard for me to understand why dealerships in the US can get away with trying to scam people and put such high markups on. In Thailand dealerships compete to give discounts and promotions so they can sale. Totally different from the US where it’s like you’re begging them to sell you a car.

  7. Well as an American I don’t want an American car either. And American cars are larger than almost and other cars made in the world. Large cars that are made overseas are mostly made to be sold in the USA. Every where else likes small cars

  8. Well it’s very simple you don’t need to watch a big video the reason is American cars are big and Japan is small why have huge cars in such a small country

  9. Oh i see this was 4 years ago now, yeah it became just that. We eagerly legislated so that small cars/trucks get taxed and restricted far greater then larger ones decades ago and never updated anything, what did we expect to happen in every other country that doesn't have the space and needs of ours? Whats genuinely useful in size here is a burden almost everywhere else.
