A pair of typical blue jeans might not cost you much, but it could set you back a few hundred dollars if it’s the renowned Japanese selvage variety. Japanese denim from a brand like Momotaro in Kojima, Japan, can cost over $2,000. Today, Japanese denim is often regarded as one of the finest types of denim in the industry. So what’s so special about Japanese denim? And why is it so expensive?

Editor’s Note: In this video, the translation at 10:40 is incorrect. The year should be 1965, not 1964. The correct translation of Manabe’s quote is “It was during this time that jeans production began in Kojima, in 1965.” Insider regrets the error.

    🎊🇯🇵🇹🇷🇯🇵🎊

  2. Dyed denim is nice and personally owning a pair of theses pants might be milestone. I’m just not a fan of when dyed denim rubs against my white shoes. So I guess these jeans are for important occasions.

  3. Did anyone else notice the fabric of the jacket the man is wearing who's dyeing the thread? It's the most extraordinary chunky weave denim I've ever seen. You can almost see how incredibly soft and tough it is. Stunning stuff if you're a textiles nerd. 🙂 I'd like to buy him some rubber gloves tho…

  4. вековая история технологии, 15 лет тренировки мастера, 6 месяцев на изготовление одной пары, и 1 год до сквозной дырки на очке

  5. Jeans and dungarees used to be reasonably-priced, hard-wearing work clothes for people who did manual labour. Now they're highfalutin, pretentious, ridiculously expensive "objects of desire". Makes no sense to me. Oh and he could prevent his hands from being dyed blue for 3 months by the simple expedient of wearing rubber gloves. Not watching any more of this rubbish.

  6. My Levis Made & Crafted in Japan are a fraction of the price of these but I'm rocking the same pair for years on years. Highly recommended if you want quality jeans without breaking the bank.

  7. The fact these looms are still running day in day out after 70 years raises serious questions about our progression, I feel people are dumber, materials are of less quality and people just don’t care anymore. The corporate structure has ruined it all through greed and obsession with control and dominance.
