The NFL is one of the biggest and most profitable sports leagues in the United States. But players in the NBA have the highest average salary per player and earn more money from endorsement deals than NFL and MLB players.

Why NBA Players Out Earn Other US Athletes

  1. Fundamentally NFL and NBL will never be more popular than nba every the most popular sports in the world if we're being realistic is Football (the real one) Cricket and Basketball in that order. Cricket being mainly concentrated in india and pakistan.

So we'll go with football and basketball for simplicity. Basketball courts are way smaller than rugby and baseball fields so naturally its cheaper to build them and if a huge plot of land was sectioned out football field would take priority. U can play 1v1 all the way to 5v5 in basketball with basically no specific equipment. Lower costs and ease of access will make basketball a better choice of sports to majority of the world, aside from football

  2. It mainly has to do with roster size vs revenue.

The NBA has an average roster size of 15 players, while NFL teams have 53 players.
The NBA brings in less revenue at about $12 billion, compared to about $25 billion for the NFL.
So, while the NFL has about twice the revenue, they have 3.53x more players.
The NFL ALSO has 2 more teams as well, which doesn't DRASTICALLY change things, but it def makes a dent.
So, the average revenue per team/player for the NBA is $400m/$26.66m, and for the NFL its $781.25m/$14.74m.
So, while the NBA brings in half the total revenue, the revenue per player is 80% higher. This makes it much easier to pay your players more.
The same can be said for the MLB as well.
The roster size for an MLB team is 26 players.
While the MLB brings in a slightly higher revenue compared to the NBA @ $14 billion, the rosters have 9 more (or 73%) players per team.
The average revenue per team/player for the MLB is $466m/$17.95m
So the rankings for revenue per player are:
    1) NBA @ $26.66m (80% higher than NFL, 49% higher than the MLB)
    2) MLB @ $17.95m (22% higher than the NFL)
    3) NFL @ $14.74m

This is the main reason why the NBA can pay its players more.

Also, the cost to play games is MUCH lower for the NBA, especially when compared to the NFL.
An NFL field is much larger, and requires lines, numbers, etc, that have to be painted on new before every game. The players also wear equipment that costs a lot more, like helmets, pads, etc. All NBA players need are their jerseys and shoes.
For the MLB they requires field upkeep on the grass, they have to put new lines down for every game, etc.

To dive even deeper, injuries are much worse and much more common in the NFL, this requires a lot more money on medical professionals along with financial incentives for players that contrast with the risk of injury.

  3. waittt, I had no idea about NFL nor how American Football work, but they only had 16 games in regular season????

NHL and NBA had 82 regular season games and MLB had 162 regular season games that would past for at least 4 months + 2 months of PO

with only 16 games how long it last for one season then??

  4. basically the more people pay to watch, the more the player makes. So stop complaining about women sports pays less than men, go watch these games and they will get pay more. Just business

  5. I think the one key difference about the NBA compared to the other major pro sports leagues (like NFL and MLB) is basketball is more popular on a globally level. Basketball and the NBA has a bigger market of fans and viewers they can attract outside of their own domestic market. Just take a look at how it pays huge dividends for the NBA and its players salaries #NBA #BasketballNeverStops #Business

  6. Basketball seems to be the most enjoyed American sport outside of America. This is an anecdotal claim by the way, but I have been to a few continents and people generally gather to watch Football (Soccer) or Basketball.

  7. Nobody complain when they see a shoplifter.. We've got alot of bigger criminals to fry.. absolutely obscene and disgusting.. would seem apparent but we're so blinded as a society

  8. Pretty wild stuff. Season tickets for football is rather cheap when considering it’s profit margins and the assets that require capital plus season tickets come out to 10 games, two preseasons and 8 homes games. Something is missing from the equation. Lakers tickets are indubitably exuberant when I’m sure a Milwaukee Bucks home game in just above courtside only charges I’ll guess 30% of a Lakers nosebleed seat. We can use a vid on the cash flows sources in depth and that would make a ton of less confusion.

  9. CNBC thank you for publishing this incredible video that explains how athletes are getting paid. And explains how enforcements work and how Sponsorships work as well. And also guaranteed contracts and explaining how they work hearing about the business of sports is something that the world is just learning about looking forward to more videos like this.

  10. Im African….football(European) is a religion here, the biggest sport in the world, its political, emotional, heartfelt its like going to war…the best sports in the world…

  11. this is why football and basketball are the two best sports in the world. Easily accessible and easy to understand. both are highly entertaining and competitive (although basketball is more competitive). It’s why majority of the biggest athletes in the world are NBA players and footballers

  12. ? Question? : What would it be like if all the NBA owners ,as well as other sports owners started a process of 'Yearly Performance-Based Pay' for each individual team player; thus, as a method for owners for having a real chance or increasing their chance to achieve a yearly Championship? The amount/number of $ millions dollars based on my overall yearly accomplishments? WR

  13. when they do all the sports league statistics, superbowl is higher than NBA finals not cause of the game but cause of the half time concerts and commercials on YT, basketball on the other hand is more known worldwide, I actually know Giselle Bundchen before knowing Tom Brady but even though I don't play basketball I know players from Magic-Larry Bird era, to Jordan Era and even the lebron era and I can even remember who are the nba champions from the 80's up until the present era (Bucks)

  14. You see, the Mexicans were spinning the boy and forced the Americans (Basketball Association) to yield to the nationals (Mexican nationals) into yielding OR the boy's truth would be known. The lesbian mother thought it all funny to see mankind go to his knees.

  15. US football is one of the most boring things I have ever seen. 10 seconds of action followed by a 10 minute break, then repeat for 6 hrs. no thanks. Basketball is preferred by most of the world hence the extra money

  16. Basketball is an international sport.
As a Brit, I can name hundreds if not thousands of NBA and basketball players from today and from history.
I can name maybe 10-15 NFL players and not sure I even know any baseball players.
