Why Teachers Are Paid So Little In The U.S.

29

Teachers earn nearly 20% less than other professionals with similar education and experience, according to the Economic Policy Institute. In many states, their wages are below the living wage, forcing teachers to seek secondary jobs to supplement their income or leave the profession all together.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and the rise of remote learning, the challenges faced by educators has become increasingly demanding. Some organizations are trying to redesign teacher pay structures in some of the 13,500 public school districts nationwide. Watch the video above to learn more about why teachers are paid so little and how to fix that.

  1. 1 Students Tuition Fee: $100,000
A class of 20 students tuition fee: $2,000,000
    Teacher’s Salary: $38,617

I wonder where the rest of the money went? 🤔

  2. Weak video. There’s no discussion of median incomes which is the source of their pay. Maybe these so called smart teachers should learn about economics and demographics and work in areas that have higher median incomes at a chance at higher pay. Do the research like anyone pursuing a higher pay with a better company. This is not ‘rocket science’!

Too many want to be social justice warriors!

  4. i changed my degree in the midst of the semester to nursing. I see too many of my old teachers, cant even make it on texas teacher retirement. I love teaching, but sometimes its not worth it.

  5. Average American worker has a “compensated” year of 2080 hours, which is 260 days. Teachers, on the other hand, have an average of contract days at 184 days. That means they work 30% fewer days than the average worker PLUS get crazy awesome benefits (free or nearly free insurance, pensions, government loan programs, student loan forgiveness, etc.)

  6. You pay a police officer because they keep your communities safe. A firefighter to save you from fires. A paramedic to apply first aid when you most need it.

So why can't you pay a Teacher what is due to him/her? It is not about what they contribute today but how much will they contribute once that student becomes the Next Bill Gates. Or Barack Obama. Or Mark Zuckelberg.

A Police officer makes sure that communities are safe. A teacher is responsible for that person becoming a Police Officer. So basically, ANYTHING that the Police Officer does for that community can be attributed back to the Teacher. That is how you should view the situation.

  7. Sad part. Cities can afford to pay teachers more.

Some school board members earn over 100k. Cities have money to build new buildings, make City Hall look super spiffy, upgrade down town. They can afford to pay teachers more with all the taxes they collect.

We need less city leaders who take fat checks and more giving back to community they tax so heavily.

  8. Because US politicians don't want education as that makes creating dictatorship of big government much harder. Low pay buys votes for one group while requiring all kinds of hate education buys votes from others. No time to really teach so blame teachers for kids not passing required tests as kids rule the classroom making teaching impossible.

  9. They are paid what they are paid based on replaceability. I work as a consultant, but might have become a teacher instead if the pay were high enough, and if the wokesters didn't rule with an iron fist. It's not like i wouldn't be just as qualified as existing teachers.

Teacher pay has not kept up with the feminist push to be single yet own a house and have children. It's a job that requires a separate breadwinner in the household.

  10. And then… when the best teachers apply for roles of leadership and the parents support them in it.. and they do not get the position even when they are tremendously qualified, work so many hours beyond any 8 hour day, every day, have a proven track record of being a strong leader and … some crappy outside hire who bullies the students, ignores the parents and has only numbers on their mind is brought in.. time and again.
    Ya.
We are the rulers of screwing over our own children, our own nation. This is what the ‘survival of the fittest, ya snooze ya lose, may the best man win’ mentality here in the states gets us.
