Why the US doesn’t use metric (even though it does) | Did You Know?

It’s a weighty issue.

Pretty much every country in the world uses the metric system for measurement — having a universal system would be like having a common language across the world, making it easier to communicate, trade and invest. So why doesn’t the US want to commit to the metric system? Technically, it already has — it’s officially the “preferred system of weights and measures for United States trade and commerce”. But the change has never been made compulsory for everyone, so most of the country continues to use the imperial system.

  1. I have converted most of my recipes to metric because I weigh most of the ingredients, and it is much easier to scale a recipe in metric. In my Chemistry and Physics classes at university, we only used metric.

  2. Very good explanation, very informative!
There is NO "Metric System", what in fact exists is the "Système international d'unités" (International system of units) also known as "SI units" since 1960 as you explained.
The reason for the US not using SI units in daily life is NATIONAL PRIDE, there is no other explanation.
    Greetings from Brasil.

  3. I use Alen (forarm), an old viking measure, and insists on using that in the US.
I'm not fond of eating foot long baguettes. They have to take of their shoes to measure it…… 😮

  4. Common sense seems to be lost for the Americans. The rest of the world is using a system that it is not only easier, it is logic.
Being different is not the same as being stubborn and that is the main reason because the Americans, and not surprise: the Canadians keep doing the same.
I truly believe that those folks refuse to change their ways for another good reason: old people can not learn new tricks.
    Greetings from Toronto.

  5. You may want to add a major barrier is the US Building Code that is imperial. Converting every county buildings office to SI would be pretty onerous.

  6. Also you may see very often they use car tire diameter in standard system in many countries. Rim diameter 14", 15" 16" and ….

The whole world haven't change it to metric.

  7. As a carpenter in my 30’s theres no way in hell I could switch to metric now. People keep saying how “intuitive” it is. Intuitive is entirely subjective. It would take me years to learn new ways of measuring and figuring things by eye and getting to the same level of “intuitive” the standard system is for me now. It’s no different than language. I could say Japanese is less “intuitive”, but that would indeed be an ignorant thing to say.

  8. And how the hell to these poor metric people tell time? What with all those fractions of 60 and 24!?!?? WE NEED 100 SECOND MINUTES AND 100 MINUTE HOURS AND 100 HOUR DAYS AND 100 DAY YEARS! IT’S MORE INTUITIVE!!!!!!

  9. It is 100% true the USA uses the metric system in medicine, science and engering, however, the domestic market, they still use miles, gallons (USgallon=3.7 Litres, UKgallon=4.5 Litres), even though packeting has both measurements, but generally, 98% of American's use imperial measuraments!

  10. The US doesn’t use the Imperial system. It uses US customary units. These units are based on the measures used at the time. Those measures are also the parents of the British imperial system.

  11. As an engineer, units of 10 is enticing. As an American, our system connects us to our culture and is derived from man's unit of labor. The Metric system is abstract and demands conformity to units of 10. It's not derived from anything related to culture, it's all made up.

  12. I’m totally ok with the US using their own measures, but why use different fractions? 1/12? 1/16?
With metric you only have to use decimal base fractions: 1/10, 1/100, 1/1000, etc. There’s a reason why it’s used for currency: it’s easy, quick, and minimize errors.

  13. Imperial system was kept to define satanic globe
Why is our government/science honoring Satan ?

The speed of Earth’s orbit is 18.5mps which just happens to be 66,600mph. Earth’s curvature drops eight inches per mile squared, which just happens to be .666 inches per square foot, 10 miles = 66.666 feet, 100 miles = 6666.666 feet and so on. Earth’s axis of rotation and it’s plane of orbit around the Sun just happens to be 66.6º. Both polar circles which are located near the poles of the Earth just happens to be 66.6º. There's a 666 trillion mile discrepancy concerning the distance from Earth to Polaris and of course the Earth is tilted at 23.4º which just happens to be a 66.6º tilt from the 90º right angle. All of this while exploding through space at what just happens to be 2,843,666mph. Do you see the problem ? We've been worshiping Satan all this time without even knowing it. The joke is on us. (Such is the way of true evilness.)

Gravity was fabricated in 1666. The Washington Monument just happens to be 6,666 inches by 666 inches ? The Pentagon just happens to be a pentagram ? The Vatican (synonymous with pedophilia) just happens to have named their telescope ”Lucifer” and they won’t let us near it.

ºThe word nasa is in The Bible* it means beguile which means to deceive. Goddard as in “The Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center” is also mentioned, its Lucifer’s original name and it still is.

ºNASA named their Tower of Babel “ Saturn V” in honor of Satin and their missions Mercury, Gemini and Apollo were all named after false gods. And let’s not forget the many human sacrifices that there were. When we give praise or money to NASA and it’s Goddard religion, we are literally praising and financing the Lucifer concept. Rather there's a God or not.

ºScience named the chief/wondering stars “Planets” so we’d think that there are other worlds and then they named the so called planets after false gods except Earth which is not a planet, it’s a world (There is physical or phenomenal life here and only here).

There’s no such thing as planets, gravity, relativity, infinite space, aliens or even evolution. Depth is a perception and space is fake. Space is water it’s called "The Waters, The Great Deep, Thrum, Mayim, Celestial Seas or Primal Ocean" and it doesn't surprise me one bit that millions of people can spend their entire lives looking into an ocean with a telescope and never see any water. People have been trained to trust not their minds and eyes but their education. Water was never created, water is the medium of creation.

  14. I well remember the new speed signs in Australia and lessons being taught in primary school to get us all accustomed to the changes. My first car in 1980 was built in 1968 so the speedo (yes, we call that dial a speedo) was in mph. Australia already had converted from UK currency to dollars and cents in the early 60s so this was just one more innovation to make life easier.

  15. The thing about the US and changes peoples daily lives in such a direct way is it you have to basically ram it through (with lots of lube of course). Because if you go about it slowly and voluntarily, it’s gonna fail.

  16. i hate those anti metric memes.. i know the usa went to the moon, but thats thanks to the budget and has nothing to do with the system they use, and non of the metric people cant use imperial, but imperial understand both.. sorry but that means metric people dont need imperial, and imperial users need metric..

  17. 1 liter = 10x10x10 cm
    1 meter = 100cm
    1000 grams = 1 liter of water
0 degrees celcius water freezes, 100 degrees celcius water boils
1 bar = 14,5psi = atmospheric pressure at sea level
day month year instead of month day year

  18. Celsius needs to be more divided. At least for AC units. Fahrenheit is far more precise to getting the temperature you want. Since AC units don't do fraction temperatures.
