“The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers — loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.

“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”

The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on YouTube. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.

“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”

But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news — the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.

It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.

“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”

With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on YouTube, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do — even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.

While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.

But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks — who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago — the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.

Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king — the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.

I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”

And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”

Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”

It’s probably for the best — the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all — class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

  1. I like to ask them what if Joe Biden had called up the New York times and strikes out a deal just like Trump had with the enquirer, so that any negative Hunter Biden Story doesn't come out before election day and then ask fox news if they are ok with that situation. I get that out of all the cases pending. This one is the most ridiculous. I mean the audacity for anyone to go after campaign finance when we LITERALLY allow corporations to buy politicians is whatever. As of the way it works now trump broke the law and since he will never be prosecuted for taking bribes from Saudi Arabi or channeling people who work for him to only stay in his hotel on official trips, even if it's on the other side of Ireland. So what if we never find out where the hell all the money from the inaugural fund went . Cause God knows we didn't pay 8 john deer tractor drivers and three doors down a 100 million dollars. I could go on forever because he LITERALLY broke the law every hour. SERIOUSLY because he would burn and shred every piece of paper when done. (Which is a big no-no when you work in the White House. Pretty sure only toilet paper is allowed to be thrown out… Sorry for the rant it's been a day…

  2. It’s like a Greek tragedy, all these people claiming trump assaulted women and cheats on his taxes. The first person to publicly make these claims, Donald Trump. Just so weird he’s on camera so many times bragging about sexual assault and cheating making him smart and people loved it up until he was charged. Now they act like he never bragged about those things and like they didn’t like him for it

  3. Remember when Mrs. Obama said, "for the first time i feel proud to be an American" And the reaction Fox had over it? You think anyone on the Right is going to shame this fake blond Fox guest for saying she's not proud to be an American!? The Right's Shame knows no bounds!

  4. I nvr understand whether they think Biden is a half dead zombie or a mad scientist whose secretly planning all of trumps indictments. I thought they said he wasn't even 'in charge' 😭

  5. Faux Propaganda is owned by Ruppert Murdock who is a zealot Zionist Jew. Take that with a grain of salt. Just stating facts.

He and his family are eroding Australia and the UK as they have done to the USA.

  6. @karolineLeavit OMG yes! As a proud American, I too am disgusted that our former president is on trial for criminal behavior. I’m also pretty embarrassed. TBH voices like yours are also adding to my shame

  7. Kyle, thanks for expressing your frustration with Fox News and how detrimental that channel in particular is to the US population and beyond. I’m all for the freedom of press but that channel pushes the boundaries beyond what’s acceptable I think. I hope one day we can overcome the incentives that drive such programming and help the people who are being taken advantage of.

  8. "Far left DA"…names a neoliberal centrist.

If you're a right winger reading this understand 1 thing. People who ACTUALLY understand politics know beyond the shadow of a doubt that there IS NO far left in American politics. In fact almost everyone in power in our country is center-right to right wing. This is just a fact. So when you say "far left" you're just making yourself look REALLY dumb.

  9. Her response pretty much sums up every Trump supporter's take on his trials, "How dare they treat Trump in the same way they would treat one of us!"

This woman's overblown hyperbole could only be topped if she dropped to her knees and gobbled his tiny mushroom live on air.

  10. This is the same what Martha Stewart went to jail, and Nancy Pelosi did most of her political life, a FRAUD.
Becuse Trumpet was a president doesn't make him immune to charges for criminal acts he committed. LOCK HIM UP!!!

  11. It's so insane how people like these are always acting like it can somehow only ever be fair if someone is prosecuted by their own… It's the same thing as how Israel is constantly supposed to investigate itself. It's the same demanding it should be a republican prosecutor and republican judge etc…

  12. I don't know any 54 year olds who watch Fox 24/7/365, but I used to work for an octogenarian who watched Fox all day and all night. I spent most of my time in the kitchen and with the dog because I didn't want to watch Fox. And, yes, she believed J6 was peaceful and not what we saw with our own eyes.

  13. And now they are worried about tax payer dollars, what about the years-long manhunt for Biden? which still continues even though nothing criminal has been found?

  14. To Republicans, anything a Democrat does is considered criminal even when it’s not, but when one of their own commits an actual crime, it’s a persecution. This is the height of hypocrisy!
