Tech workers hit with layoffs and decreasing salaries

According to data from Layoffs.fyi, more than 20,000 employees were fired from their jobs in the tech sector in April. In addition, according to data from Women Impact Tech, salaries for workers in tech dropped over 12% in 2023.
Women Impact Tech CEO Paula Bratcher Ratliff joins Wealth! to break down the situation for tech workers, highlighting heightened volatility in tech’s segment of the US labor market.
On a more positive note, Ratliff claims: “We’re seeing about 20% increase over prior years trajectory in hiring for tech workers, and a lot of that has been powered by AI. There’s always been this concern, ‘will AI cause us to lose more tech workers?’ and we’re seeing the opposite effect. AI, and other innovations are driving more tech need for organizations and we’re seeing improved hiring, and improved hiring in the human capital space for tech because of AI and the impacts of resumes and resume writing.”

  1. House prices not dropping much, car prices stubbornly high (except EVS at the moment), rents stubbornly high, why should we settle for base salary drop far more than housing, food, transportation?

  2. within next five year all current high paying salary jobs in it industry going to hit hard by ai, either salaries will be reduced or you will loose your job, as new youth will come for job with low salary expectation and command on ai

  3. if the cost of living was not 5x what a man brings home so many women would not be screaming to work everyday because they already have their hands full unless they are single…

  4. There were 110,000 OPT student visas last year. Mostly from India. OPT gives a 15% discount to hire a foreign student over a local worker. And STEM OPT (programming for example) can last for 27 months. Instead of have an OPT, only for foreign workers. We should extend the OPT to all students and the unemployed. This could be part of an apprenticeship program, that lasts up to 3 years. If the worker leaves early, they pay back the tax break. This would incentivize employer training.

  5. Overpaid for the work they do (and lack thereof). I know plenty of people in these types of jobs doing only a few hours a day of actual work while getting paid a full days worth in 2 different positions. 400k plus for 3 hours a day of work? it was about time.

  6. Part of the decline in average wages is that most of the jobs being created (nearly all actually) are part-time position and hours worked are declining due to that. Full-time jobs have not increased but declined 3 straight months in a row.
