33. Seeing that kid at the rally makes me sad. It reminds me of a documentary I saw years ago, so the words may be wrong but the story stuck with me.

    They were interviewing an older Black ballerina (older in the sense most dancers faze out of performing in their mid 30s, I think she was retired by this interview) about the struggles of getting into the business and she said how she was the only Black person in her troupe at the time. They went all over the country, but when they'd go into the deep south, sometimes she just wouldn't perform while they were in that city because they didn't want to deal with disturbances from the audience. But in one city, her friends outright told her to stay in her room because they heard there was going to be a KKK rally at the hotel, and she saw some of the ceremony going on the lawn outside that night which made her scared and sad. But the next morning, since she had members of the troupe back eith her, she went down to breakfast in the lobby and hiw surreal it was seeing all these families; laughing, conversing, there with their kids, just ordinary people but she knew that at least some if not all were part of that KKK display the night before. And it made them seem with these families, these little ones, both more human and more terrifying in that moment.

    Kids are sponges. I worry a lot for just what the kids at these rallies think of all this. One of the few fights I ever had to break up at school was over the 2020 election. They're more plugged in than ever to what's going on in the world.
